Beaulieu Twinning Association Visit to Hautvillers – May 2026

Members of the Beaulieu Twinning Association enjoyed a truly memorable exchange visit to Hautvillers over the weekend of 1–4 May 2026, marking an important milestone in the life of our partnership.

This year’s visit celebrated 40 years of twinning—"jumelage”—between Beaulieu and Hautvillers. The anniversary was first commemorated in Beaulieu last year, when our French friends travelled to the New Forest, and it was fitting that the celebrations continued in France this spring.

A group of 27 members travelled from Beaulieu, either by car or minibus, arriving on Friday 1 May in glorious sunshine. The visit was superbly organised by Chris Morley and the Twinning Association team, and we were delighted that Lord and Lady Montagu were also able to join the visit.

A Warm Welcome

Our hosts in Hautvillers extended a wonderfully warm welcome, looking after everyone with great generosity and care. The Friday evening was spent settling in and enjoying time with host families, setting the tone for a weekend defined by friendship and hospitality.

Exploring Champagne Heritage

Saturday 2 May brought another day of beautiful weather, with temperatures reaching around 24°C. The group visited the Pressoria Champagne Museum, which provided a fascinating and immersive insight into the world of champagne. From the changing seasons in the vineyards to the intricate processes of pressing, fermentation and riddling, the visit brought to life the craftsmanship behind one of France’s most celebrated exports.

In the afternoon, the group travelled to nearby Reims to visit the magnificent Reims Cathedral. This extraordinary cathedral, with origins dating back to the 10th century, offered a powerful sense of history. Our guided tour explored its dramatic past and allowed us to fully appreciate its architectural beauty and cultural significance.

A Celebratory Evening

Saturday evening featured a formal dinner held at the Salle des Fêtes, attended by around 80 guests. We were treated to an outstanding five-course traditional French meal, accompanied by local musicians who added to the lively and convivial atmosphere. It was a wonderful occasion, with conversation flowing easily and the long-standing bonds of friendship between our communities clearly evident.

A Day of Celebration

Sunday’s programme was more formal in nature. Although the weather turned cooler with periods of rain, it did nothing to dampen spirits. The day began with a joyful musical procession through the village led by the Hautvillers brass band, who then performed further pieces in the main square. A local choir also delighted everyone with a selection of French and English songs, warmly received by all.

Speeches followed, including from the Mayor of Hautvillers, Silvère Pierrot, and from Lord Montagu. Each reflected on the importance of the twinning relationship and the enduring friendships that have developed over four decades. There was an exchange of gifts between our two communities celebrating the anniversary.

The original twinning oath setting up the twinning, or jumelage, was signed on 18 May 1985. Following the speeches, there was a formal reaffirmation of that twinning oath with the signature of a new oath confirming that we will continue and further strengthen the exchanges and the bonds of friendship and brotherhood between our villages for the greatest benefit of present and future generations.

The day concluded with a relaxed supper with our hosts, providing a final opportunity to share stories and enjoy each other’s company before departures on Monday morning.

A Lasting Friendship

This visit was a fitting celebration of 40 years of jumelage between Beaulieu and Hautvillers. It reinforced the strong ties between our communities and created many new memories that will be cherished for years to come.

We extend our sincere thanks to our hosts for their exceptional hospitality, and to everyone involved in organising such a successful and enjoyable visit.
